Flying cabs in India. Yes, you heard it right. India shortlisted for flying cab service. Also food delivery through drones will be introduced by Uber Eats shortly.

Tired of choked road traffic conditions in India, don't worry Uber has solved your issue. After evaluating countries across the globe, Uber has selected India among the first five countries to get flying cab service. Other countries which are shortlisted for flying cab service are Japan, Australia, Brazil and France. Uber made the announcement at its Uber Elevate Asia Pacific Expo in Tokyo on Thursday.

The news come as Uber looks beyond its origins as a fancy car service and into new modes of transportation, including bikes, scooters and yes even "Flying Cars". Uber's plan to fill the skies above cities with swarms of electric-powered air taxis is only two years old, but the company has already convened two well-attended summits and landed dozens of partners in aircraft manufacturing, battery technology, real estate and government regulation.

Uber has been working on taking the aerial route under its Elevate program for sometime now. The vision is to offer a flight on demand at the push of a button, or in Uber's case, tapping the necessary toggle in its Android and iOS app.

To enable this, Uber has assembled a network of partners that includes vehicle manufacturers, real estate developers and technology developers. "The Uber Elevate team is now inviting conversations with stakeholders across major cities in the shortlisted countries and will announce the chosen Uber Air international city within the next six months," said the company.

The company has also released first looks of possible future Uber Air routes for Delhi, Tokyo, Mumbai, Sydney and Taipei. Uber Elevate has established a criteria to select the the third city, set around three main principles: sizable market, local commitment and enabling conditions. Uber will choose one of the cities from these 5 shortlisted countries as its third launch city for flying taxis- after Dallas and Los Angeles in the US.

Uber said "Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru are some of the most congested cities in the world, where travelling even a few kilometers can take over an hour". It belives that its aerial service has tremendous potential to help create a transportation option that bypasses congestion, instead of adding to it. Uber belives that Uber Air can immediately transform transportation and take technology to new heights.

"In the next five years, Uber customers in launch cities will be able to push a button and get a flight on demand".

The company also announced that it is looking to introduce food delivery through drones in the country as well, leveraging the same assets and systems being built for Uber Air.

To be sure, the technology that would power Uber's air taxi network is still nascent and won't leave the testing phase for some time. There is also still no guarantee that the tech can support the type of service Uber envisions. The need for batteries that are lightweight enough to power these short flights across cities is one possible hurdle. The willingness of customers to trust Uber to keep them safe while flying above dense, heavily populated cities is another.

But the company is clearly trying to capitalize on a recent explosion of interest in lightweight, electric-powered, vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. There are atleast 19 companies developing flying car plans, including legacy manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus.

So let's keep our fingers crossed and hope for flying cabs in India.  If all goes according to the plan, Uber will be far ahead from its competitors, because it will definitely get the first mover advantage as no other company in India has come up this level of idea. But still there is lot to be done to successfully establish flying cabs network across India.
