Now a days this type of scam on google is on rise, and you should know about that so that you might not lose your money on these types of scams on google. So firstly note that this is not a hack or vulnerability from Google's end but it is a misuse of Google search service. It is simply the exploitation of a service that Google made to help internet users.
Google has become part and parcel of our lives and now a days almost everyone has mobile phones and we all have a habit to Google search to find information about local business, customer care of various companies, but beware scamsters are targeting such type of users so be careful if you Google search to get the customer care number of some service as it might prove costly if you get the wrong number.
Sharing your personal info and bank details to these wrong persons might prove very costly for you. Recently, a woman lost 95000 Rs after she searched for the customer care number of Swiggy Go, as she contacted a fraudster to get her issue resolved. So prevent yourself from such scam on google.
So here is the Google Scam that people are losing money to and what you should know about it.
Scamsters post fake customer care numbers and fake business listings on fake websites to make innocent people believe that these are original customer care number of apps like Swiggy, Zomato, Paytm and even government organisations. People often fall in these type of traps as they have reason to doubt that. They believe whatever appeared on google is true and afterwards they call on that fake numbers appearing on google search.
Scamsters often change the contact number of places to scam people as google allows users to edit contact details of shops/ banks and other establishments on Google Maps and Google search to help better these services. This is where scamsters take advantage and change the contact number of places to scam people. Seriously these scamsters have found uncountable ways to dupe innocent people and now they are using these tactics to scam on google.
Fraudsters pretends as a customer care executive and asks personal details to confirm the call, please note that these personal details often include banking information and generally a normal person tell these details to so called customer care executive.
Now the main part is scam, now that the fake customer care executive have all the personal details of the concerned person so now the scamster might either tell to download an app or will send a link on the victim's phone. In most cases the app could be AnyDesk or TeamViewer or any other remote desktop sharing app. So here is the little trick, with the remote desktop sharing apps, the users gives the screen sharing code to the scamster that enables him to see whatever the victim is doing on his/her phone secretly.
In case of UPI Scams the fraudster uses the 'Request Money' option to dupe people,.One such case happened in which Amit Sangvi, a 25 year old from Mumbai was cheated. On 29th September 2018 Amit initiated a transfer process to send Rs 20000 to his father using BHIM UPI app. But app displayed a message stating that the transaction had failed. However he received an SMS from his bank stating that his account had been debited with the same amount.
He was stunned after receiving that message from bank and later on he decided to call the customer care given on the twitter account of the app. Fraudster had created a fake twitter account for BHIM and given a fake contact number. Amit called on the given number, the customer executive (fake) took his complaint of the unsuccessful transfer. The call centre fraudster assured Amit that such technical glitches are common, there is no reason to worry about it.
He further said that a few notifications would be delivered to his (Amit) number and that he needed to accept them. Amit did what he was instructed to do by the representative (fraudster) on the call. He started accepting all the notifications, and later on 20000 Rs got wiped off from his account which he realised only after hanging up the call.
So this is the high time that we should get aware of these types of scams on google/ other apps, though there are government helplines/ centres to help out on these issues but we need to understand that everytime we cannot rely on government to help us out in these types of scams. We need to be smart enough to prevent ourselves from such 'Google Scams'.
