Ayushmann Khurrana an Indian actor, singer who is emerging as a next big thing in bollywood is known for his unique, gutsy film selection. Throughout his career Ayushmann Khurrana has selected unconventional yet entertaining scripts which no other young actor dared to choose. Due to his risk taking ability in choosing different kind of scripts, audience is absolutely loving him. And it would be totally right to say that he is now considered as the new hit machine of Bollywood.
Ayushmann Khurrana started off his career with Shoojit Sircar's Vicky Donor, which touches on the taboo subject of infertility and sperm donation, not only did he prove he could act, he gave many people faith in mainstream Bollywood's future. But that success was shortlived, after Vicky Donor three consecutive movies of Ayushmann Khurrana went flop. But that was the turning and indeed the best learning point of his career. He recently said in an interview that "failures define a person. Success is a very lousy teacher".
After Vicky Donor Ayushmann's movies were going flop, but he returned with a bang with Dum Laga ke Haisha as a school dropout, who hesitantly marries an educated but overweight girl, since then Ayushmann has not looked back. He has delivered various hit films in a row. He continued his successful streak with Bareilly Ki Barfi, Shubh Mangal Savdhaan, Badhaai Ho, Andhadhun, Article 15, Dream Girl and Bala. Ayushmann Khurrana will be next seen in Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan which is based on a gay love story.
In 2018-2019 Ayushmann was no doubt the most in demand actor. With the films like Andhadhun and Badhaai Ho he has managed to create goodwill among the audience and as a result of this goodwill his movies like Dream Girl, Bala went on to become such major hit. There is something in Ayushmann that other actors don't have. The way he connects with the audience with his movies on variety of subjects make him the standout performer in Bollywood.
Movies like Badhaai Ho, Shubh Mangal Savdhaan, Dream Girl and Bala went on to become such major hit because audience have not seen movies on these type of subjects before. These type of subjects are so widespread and common in India but still no other actor dared to do movies on these kind of subjects, genre.
In Badhaai Ho the old age romance is shown, which is quite a unconventional topic in India. Badhaai Ho movie breaks the stereotype of the society by adequately showing the old age romance and how well Ayushmann's family handles the society pressure in the movie.
In Shubh Mangal Saavdhan problem like erectile dysfunction was the center plot of the movie and the whole story revolves around it. In Dream Girl Ayushmann Khurrana conveys message that even in the presence of various people, some people are lonely, they need someone to talk to, they need someone to understand their feelings in a way no one understands.
In Bala Ayushmann Khurrana portrays the role of middle aged bald man, he is suffering from premature baldness in the film. The actor tries various ways to stop baldness in the film but he failed. The movie showed the embarrassment of the bald man which he has to suffer daily in his life, how the society make fun of him and all the insecurity a bald man feels/faces is shown in the film. This problem is very common in India and as a result of this many people were able to relate with this and movie went on to become a hit.
Box Office Collection of recent Ayushmann Khurrana's movies and net profit analysis |
In short we can say that all of his recent movies have performed quite well on the box office and he is now one of the most successful actor of India. Majority of his movies have low budget or medium budget which makes it easier for the producer to recover the cost and due to the Ayushmann's popularity in recent times the producers have earned over 100% profit on many of his films (see the above table for details).
We have talked enough about how Ayushmann Khurrana is the new hit machine of Bollywood, how his gutsy film selection has given him fame and limelight in the country, but there is one thing that I had noticed in Ayushmann Khurrana's recent movies on unconventional subjects which I would like to point out.
Let's talk about the movie Dream Girl in which the story revolves around the ability of Ayushmann Khurrana's character's ability to impersonate a woman's voice. To be frankly honest the movie fails miserably to convey the message that despite being surrounded by so many people, we are still lonely. The story lacks originality, comic timings were not good.
The movie depicts that Ayushmann has a job in which he talks with men through a call center by impersonating a woman's voice. The point which I want you people to note that how in Dream Girl it is shown that Ayushmann hides about his job from the others because that's unconventional/or something that is needed to be hidden from the society, then he lands into some problem during the movie. He has to go through some kind of embarrassment through the movie and in the finale act he delivers a speech on the stage in which he conveys the entire message of the film. That's his script of Dream Girl literally, the writers had added more ill timed jokes though to make film little entertaining.
Now let's talk about the Bala movie, in this movie he portrays a role of middle aged bald man suffering from premature baldness. The concept of the movie was same, as of dream girl only the storyline was changed. The events, narration, embarrassment of the leading actor (suffering from some kind of problem) even that was same, little jokes to make movie entertaining just like Dream Girl, even the conclusion pattern was same.
In Bala, actor is embarrassed by his baldness or he tries to hide/ overcome his baldness. The society make fun of him just like dream girl. He then eventually lands into a problem when he his wife get to know about his baldness, same as Dream girl plot in which Ayushmann's fiance got to know about his job. Then in both the movies there are ill timed comic punches with no good storyline.
In the ending of Bala, Ayushmann's character accepts his baldness proudly and say he is no longer ashamed of it, he delivers a speech on stage and conveys a message through it (which is also same as Dream Girl in which Ayushamnn's Character accepts that he does this kind of job and delivers a mandatory speech and conveys a message through it).
The same narration, same hierarchy of events is also possible in Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan because it is a gay love story (yet another unconventional topic). The sequence of events that will happen in this movie are; firstly it will be shown that how Ayushmann and Jeetendra character hide this gay thing from the society so that they don't have to face any kind of embarrassment.
Then how this gay attribute is not accepted by their family, then the film moves on with some jokes in the middle and then eventually Ayushmann will land in some kind of problem and in the end Ayushmann Khurrana's character will openly accept about the Gay thing/his unique problem in most of his movies (Dream Girl, Bala) and then he will deliver that mandatory speech in which he conveys the social/moral message about this gay thing and how society should not deny it .............
So basically the problem is one thing that Ayushamnn Khurrana has no doubt chosen the unconventional, daring subjects to make a movie on but in these kinds of movies the good storyline is missing and they are only backed by some comic punches. The hierarchy of events is also same in his movies so as a result movie fails to deliver right kind of message and also one gets bored by seeing the same type of narration everytime.
So all I want to say that is hats off to Ayushmann Khurrana for choosing these kind of subjects to make a movie on but to change the perception of people towards certain issues and to be the face of Indian Cinema at some point in future, Ayushmann Khurrana need to focus on choosing a good script, backed with a proper storyline, narration, climax and he must analyse what his large fan following expect from his movies.
